Archangel-
defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares
of the devil. May God rebuke him, we
humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Power
of God - cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam the
world seeking the ruin of souls.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father-
send your Holy Spirit to guide our nation. May your Holy Spirit
dwell in the hearts and minds of your faithful and all who serve as
leaders. Keep us faithful to your law, protect us in our trials, lead us
to walk in your word and your love.
Through the Virgin Mary, conceived without sin,
may we be spared of all destruction and harm from without and within. .

Deliver us.

THE MYSTERIOUS ONE
Last Sunday we gathered with Peter, John, and James at the mountain
of Transfiguration and were summoned to listen to God's chosen Son. This
week the scriptures draw us into the mystery of just who that God is.
The first reading, perhaps one of the best known in the Bible, recounts
the story of Moses and the burning bush, when the mysterious divine name
is revealed. The Responsorial psalm is a hymn extolling the attributes
of God. Saint Paul and the Lord Jesus describe a God who judges and
metes out punishment. No matter the lengths to which the scriptures go,
we know that no amount of words will ever come close to capturing who
God is. Our lives and our Lents are really journeys toward that
mysterious One who will one day welcome us into the heavenly home that
awaits those who put their trust in God alone.

Thirteen Instituted as Acolytes Including One of our Own-Donald
Ard
In a private ceremony at the Diocesan Chancery, Bishop Robert Muench instituted 13 men as Acolytes, one of
the final steps before being ordained as permanent Deacons in the
Catholic Church. Among those was St. John’s parishioner, Donald Ard
(standing to the Bishop’s right), who has been studying for the
Deaconate for several years. Donald has been very active in a number of
ministries at St. John’s throughout the years, serving as a
Lector/Commentator, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, presenter
and team member for RCIA, assistance to the homebound and shut-ins.
Donald also assisted the late Fr. Matthew Faschan with Sunday Mass
services at Zachary’s Oakwood Village senior retirement community. We
celebrate the ministry of Donald Ard and wish him well as he continues
his faith journey toward full ordination as Permanent Deacon next year.
Many of us are unfamiliar with the office of Acolyte or the
duties he performs. The following excerpt comes from New Advent:
An acolyte is a cleric promoted to the fourth and highest minor order in
the Latin Church, ranking next to a subdeacon. The chief offices of an
acolyte are to light the candles on the altar, to carry them in
procession, and during the solemn singing of the Gospel; to prepare wine
and water for the sacrifice of the Mass; and to assist the sacred
ministers at the Mass, and other public services of the Church. In the
ordination of an acolyte the bishop presents him with a candle,
extinguished, and an empty cruet, using appropriate words expressive of
these duties.
TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF THE
DISTRIBUTION OF
THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST

A reminder: until such time as the threat of contagion from the H1/N1
virus has been lifted, we have discontinued distribution of the Precious
Blood during Communion. Note: This does not prevent you
from receiving the Sacrament; –"The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of
Christ."
You do
not "miss out" by not receiving the 2nd species.
ST. JOSEPH ALTAR MARCH 21st

ST. JOSEPH ALTAR MARCH 21st- We are selling candles
after each weekend Mass. Candles-$5 each-can be purchased in memory of
any loved one. Meetings continue on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM in classroom #1.
Contact Julie Behrnes at 454-0293 to get involved.
ARE YOU READY TO MARCH?

It’s that time again! The SJB Choir is going to coordinate a team of
adults to serve as Marshals in this year’s St. Patrick’s Parade in Baton
Rouge on Saturday, March 13th. St. John’s receives cash for
every person who marches in the parade, and these funds are used to add
support services for the choir, Religious Ed. and Youth Ministry. To
volunteer your time (and your feet!), call Molly Capone at 654-6673.

Need Your 2009 Tax Letter from St. John’s or Our
Lady? Let us know!!
Please call the Parish Office at 654-5778 if you need a record of
your contributions for 2009. We do not automatically mail
a copy to every contributor because of postage costs but, upon request,
we will mail yours or you can come by and pick up a copy.

Fact and Fiction About Annulments
Rumor- "It takes years to get an annulment through the
Catholic Church."
Total Fiction! The length of time it takes to complete the
annulment process is almost completely dependent on you. Yes,
it does take a little time to collect the necessary documents: your
Baptism Record, your marriage license & *marriage certificate (*if
married in the Catholic Church, your divorce decree, & a few other
documents, most of which you should have available in your records
at home anyway. We do need certified originals of each document,
however, it is not difficult to secure those items.
Rumor- "It is very expensive to get an Annulment; it’s just a
money-making scheme."
Total Fiction! In the Diocese of Baton Rouge, a fixed cost
of $950 is assessed to each completed Tribunal case. You are asked
to pay only one-half of that cost - $475.00 &
only if you can afford to pay, &.....you can pay it in
installments! Those who have financial challenges complete a
one-page hardship form when submitting the documents & it’s done!
Rumor- "You don’t have to get an annulment to receive
Communion; some priests say it’s ok."
Total Fiction! The rules of the Catholic Church are not
subject to modification by any priest. If you
have not re-married, & have fully reconciled yourself, regarding any
sins, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, you may receive Holy
Communion. If, however, you have
re-married outside of the church, your first marriage is considered
still valid, therefore, you are not in a state of grace & you should
not receive Communion.
Rumor- "It’s just not worth the trouble & pain."
Total Fiction! If you did re-marry & are not able to
receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, you are missing out on one
of the fundamental gifts of Jesus Christ when He started our church.
Why not take a small amount of time to do what is needed to return
to the graces of the Church & to again receive the Precious Body &
Blood of Christ? In addition, completing the annulment process
provides an outlet to, once & for all, purge yourself of all the
pain & sorrow associated with that past life.
Rumor-"Your ‘ex’ has to be involved & can start all sorts of
trouble."
Total Fiction! For legal purposes, we are required to
notify a former spouse that a petition for annulment has been filed
but that’s it! He or she does not get involved, with the
exception that, in very rare cases a former spouse may want to
contest your petition. No one sees your file!
Rumor- "It’ll make my children illegitimate."
Total Fiction!!!! Children–the innocent–are not ever
affected by the annulment process!
Call Ric at the Parish Office at 654-5778 to discuss what you can
do to return to a state of grace with Our Lord.
DO YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING
CALLED TO BE AN ALTAR SERVER?

THING’S NOT WASH ‘N WEAR OR TOSS AND WEAR!
Altar Servers (boys and girls), please
be certain to take your
cassock & surplice or alb home and wash, dry and press it on a
regular basis. We need to look sharp while on the Altar, serving Our

from having to do extra work.

On February 7, 2010, St. John's joined in the
celebration of 100 Years of Scouthing, through which
all scouts, past and present, participated in the celebration of the
Eucharist and where recognized for their commitment to the service
organization. Scouts served as Altar Servers,
Lectors/Commentators, Ushers and Eucharistis Ministers. In
addition to the group shot above, Matthew and Charles Flanders are
shown, having just served on the Altar.
The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Webelos have
charters at St. John’s. The Boy Scouts is one of the nation’s

conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

REMINDER -
Please remember, According to the
General Instruction of the Roman Missal, for use in the
Latin-rite dioceses of the U. S., the custom of observing silence in
churches & adjacent areas is to be retained, particularly before Mass (GIRM
45).
The GIRM directs that, if the Tabernacle with the Most
Blessed Sacrament is present in the Sanctuary, then all who are able
should genuflect when approaching the Altar & when they depart
from it. Within the celebration of the Mass itself, priests, deacons &
other ministers in the sanctuary need only make a profound bow.
The GIRM also directs that, during the recitation of
the Profession of Faith, at the words, "by the power of the Holy Spirit,
He was. . .& became man," all are to make a profound bow.
A "profound bow" is described as a bow of the body as opposed
to a simple bow of the head & "genuflection" is made by
bending the right knee to the ground (GIRM 274).

Do You Know the Pattern
of Drug Addiction? The
pattern of addiction begins with an individual who, like most
people in our society, is good intentioned and traveling through
life to get somewhere. That somewhere varies from individual to
individual, however it generally encompasses the individuals
hopes, dreams, goals for the future. The person encounters a
problem or discomfort that they do not know how to resolve
successfully. This could include problems such as difficulty
"fitting in" as a child or teenager, anxiety due to peer
pressure or work expectations, personal rejection, loss or
death, identity problems, or divorce. It can also include
physical discomfort such as an injury or chronic pain.
The person experiencing the discomfort has a
real problem and feels the present situation is unendurable, yet
sees no good solution to the problem. Everyone has experienced
this in their life to a greater or lesser degree. The difference
between an addict and the non-addict is that the addict chooses
drugs or alcohol as a solution to the unwanted problem or
discomfort.
This person tries the drugs or alcohol and
they appear to solve life’s problems. The person feels better
and now seems better able to deal with life. However, the drugs
did not change the universe and the problems still exist. The
addict wakes up in the same world but a bit weaker, a bit redder
in the eyes, feeling a bit worse, with an even lower resistance
to the problems.
If you, or someone you know, is suffering from addiction call
NarcAnon at 877-413-3073 or call the parish office.
Take control of your addiction; don’t let it control you!

Prayer After Death of Loved One
Saints of God, come to his/her aid! Come to meet him/her,
angels of the Lord! Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most
High. May Christ, Who called you, take you to Himself; may angels lead you to
Abraham's side. Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most High.
Give him/her eternal rest, O Lord, and may Your light shine
upon him/her forever. Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most
High. We commend our brother/sister, (Name) to you, Lord. Now that he/she has
passed from this life, may he/she live on in Your presence.
In Your mercy and love, forgive whatever sins he/she may have
committed through human weakness. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Thanks to Bishop Muench, there will be a number of "Station
Churches" set up throughout the Diocese during Lent so Catholics can find any
number of locations for pre-Easter confession. On five consecutive Wednesday
evenings–February 24th, March 3rd, 10th, 17th
and 24th–the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 6-8 pm
at 17 regionally located parish churches. If you have been reluctant to come to
the Sacrament or have been away from the church for some time, or you just found
it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession, this is a great
opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance. If you’re anxious about
preparing for the sacrament, the priest confessors will be there to welcome and
direct you. We’ll also have brochures in the back of all churches of our diocese
to guide you in preparing for the Sacrament, in addition to helpful information
in The Catholic Commentator and on our diocesan website:
www.diobr.org. There
is no more powerful way to "jump start" your spiritual life this Lent than by
receiving the grace of Reconciliation!
Reconciliation: Try any of these locations
throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge:
Our Lady of Mercy, Baton Rouge
St. Mark, Gonzales
St. Aloysius, Baton Rouge
St. Joseph, Paulina
St. George, Baton Rouge
St. Helena, Amite
Christ the King, LSU, Baton Rouge
Holy Ghost, Hammond
St. Pius X, Baton Rouge
St. Mary of False River. New Roads
St. Paul the Apostle, Baton Rouge
St. John the Evangelist, Plaquemine
St. Alphonsus, Greenwell Springs
St. Elizabeth, Paincourtville
Immaculate Conception, Denham Springs
St. James, St. James
St. John the Baptist, Zachary
