Please join us in reciting the Prayer for Our Nation following each Mass at St. John's and Our lady, and at home.

Please share this prayer with your family and friends so that, together, we are unified in asking for

strong, fair, moral leadership among our Nation's leaders.

For a printable copy of the Prayer for Our Nation, click here.

St. Michael the Archangel- defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Power of God - cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father- send your Holy Spirit to guide our nation.  May your Holy Spirit dwell in the hearts and minds of your faithful and all who serve as leaders. Keep us faithful to your law, protect us in our trials, lead us to walk in your word and your love.

Through the Virgin Mary, conceived without sin, may we be spared of all destruction and harm from without and within. . . .

Mary, Queen of Nations-                                              Deliver us.

O, Sacred Heart of Jesus                                   Have Mercy on Us.

O, Immaculate Heart of Mary                             Pray for Us.

O, Sacred Heart of Jesus –                                    Have Mercy on Us.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

EMBRACING YOUR CROSS

We often speak of the "crosses" we must carry in life. These can range from loss of a job to a serious or terminal illness to unhealthy relationships, and so on. The cross has become the wide-ranging metaphor for the trials, ills, and discomforts that are part and parcel of every human life. While we all understand this use of the word "cross," it does a disservice to what the Jesus of the Gospels means by it. For him, a "cross" is not something that fate, bad luck, or unfortunate circumstances foists upon one. It is, instead, something one chooses, something one embraces.

For Jesus, carrying the cross in discipleship was the rejection of earthly possessions or status, it was the sundering of bonds of kinship or friendship. It was, above all, the necessary kind of self-sacrificing, self-surrendering choice one had to make in order to be a true disciple. When life hands us a "cross," we pray to the Lord to give us strength to bear it. If we are to be true disciples, we must also pray for the strength to reach out and willingly accept a cross as well. To bear up, with God’s grace, under the burdens that are not of our own choosing does take a strong faith. But to walk willingly under the weight of the cost of discipleship shows an even stronger desire to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

THE MARK OF THE MAKER

If things created are so full of loveliness, how resplendent must be the One who made them! The wisdom of the Worker is apparent in such handiwork.

—St. Anthony of Padua

Fact and Fiction About Annulments

Rumor- "It takes years to get an annulment through the Catholic Church."

Total Fiction! The length of time it takes to complete the annulment process is almost completely dependent on you. Yes, it does take a little time to collect the necessary documents: your Baptism Record, your marriage license & *marriage certificate (*if married in the Catholic Church, your divorce decree, & a few other documents, most of which you should have available in your records at home anyway. We do need certified originals of each document, however, it is not difficult to secure those items.

Rumor- "It is very expensive to get an Annulment; it’s just a money-making scheme."

Total Fiction! In the Diocese of Baton Rouge, a fixed cost of $950 is assessed to each completed Tribunal case. You are asked to pay only one-half of that cost - $475.00 & only if you can afford to pay, &.....you can pay it in installments! Those who have financial challenges complete a one-page hardship form when submitting the documents & it’s done!

Rumor- "You don’t have to get an annulment to receive Communion; some priests say it’s ok."

Total Fiction! The rules of the Catholic Church are not subject to modification by any priest. If you have not re-married, & have fully reconciled yourself, regarding any sins, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, you may receive Holy Communion. If, however, you have re-married outside of the church, your first marriage is considered still valid, therefore, you are not in a state of grace & you should not receive Communion.

Rumor- "It’s just not worth the trouble & pain."

Total Fiction! If you did re-marry & are not able to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, you are missing out on one of the fundamental gifts of Jesus Christ when He started our church. Why not take a small amount of time to do what is needed to return to the graces of the Church & to again receive the Precious Body & Blood of Christ? In addition, completing the annulment process provides an outlet to, once & for all, purge yourself of all the pain & sorrow associated with that past life.

Rumor-"Your ‘ex’ has to be involved & can start all sorts of trouble."

Total Fiction! For legal purposes, we are required to notify a former spouse that a petition for annulment has been filed but that’s it! He or she does not get involved, with the exception that, in very rare cases a former spouse may want to contest your petition. No one sees your file!

Rumor- "It’ll make my children illegitimate."

Total Fiction!!!! Children–the innocent–are not ever affected by the annulment process!

Call Ric at the Parish Office at 654-5778 to discuss what you can do to return to a state of grace with Our Lord.

On February 7, 2010, St. John's joined in the celebration of 100 Years of Scouthing, through which all scouts, past and present, participated in the celebration of the Eucharist and where recognized for their commitment to the service organization.  Scouts served as Altar Servers, Lectors/Commentators, Ushers and Eucharistis Ministers.  In addition to the group shot above, Matthew and Charles Flanders are shown, having just served on the Altar.

The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Webelos have charters at St. John’s.  The Boy Scouts is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations.  BSA helps build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun.  The BSA believes that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

REMINDER - Please remember, According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, for use in the Latin-rite dioceses of the U. S., the custom of observing silence in churches & adjacent areas is to be retained, particularly before Mass (GIRM 45).

The GIRM directs that, if the Tabernacle with the Most Blessed Sacrament is present in the Sanctuary, then all who are able should genuflect when approaching the Altar & when they depart from it. Within the celebration of the Mass itself, priests, deacons & other ministers in the sanctuary need only make a profound bow.

The GIRM also directs that, during the recitation of the Profession of Faith, at the words, "by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was. . .& became man," all are to make a profound bow.

A "profound bow" is described as a bow of the body as opposed to a simple bow of the head & "genuflection" is made by bending the right knee to the ground (GIRM 274).

"O Come Let Us Adore Him, Christ the Lord!"

Please be reminded that our Adoration Chapel is open Monday through Friday

from Noon until 6 pm. We need volunteers to fill vacancies and ask each

of you to consider spending at least one hour each week in total communion

with Our Lord. Prayer works!

Do You Know the Pattern of Drug Addiction?

The pattern of addiction begins with an individual who, like most people in our society, is good intentioned and traveling through life to get somewhere. That somewhere varies from individual to individual, however it generally encompasses the individuals hopes, dreams, goals for the future. The person encounters a problem or discomfort that they do not know how to resolve successfully. This could include problems such as difficulty "fitting in" as a child or teenager, anxiety due to peer pressure or work expectations, personal rejection, loss or death, identity problems, or divorce. It can also include physical discomfort such as an injury or chronic pain.

The person experiencing the discomfort has a real problem and feels the present situation is unendurable, yet sees no good solution to the problem. Everyone has experienced this in their life to a greater or lesser degree. The difference between an addict and the non-addict is that the addict chooses drugs or alcohol as a solution to the unwanted problem or discomfort.

This person tries the drugs or alcohol and they appear to solve life’s problems. The person feels better and now seems better able to deal with life. However, the drugs did not change the universe and the problems still exist. The addict wakes up in the same world but a bit weaker, a bit redder in the eyes, feeling a bit worse, with an even lower resistance to the problems.

If you, or someone you know, is suffering from addiction call NarcAnon at 877-413-3073 or call the parish office.

Take control of your addiction; don’t let it control you!

Prayer After Death of Loved One ~ Saints of God, come to his/her aid! Come to meet him/her, angels of the Lord! Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most High. May Christ, Who called you, take you to Himself; may angels lead you to Abraham's side. Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most High.

Give him/her eternal rest, O Lord, and may Your light shine upon him/her forever. Receive his/her soul and present him/her to God the Most High. We commend our brother/sister, (Name) to you, Lord. Now that he/she has passed from this life, may he/she live on in Your presence. In Your mercy and love, forgive whatever sins he/she may have committed through human weakness. We ask this through Christ our Lord. ~Amen
