Just Say NO!

As you probably know, Archbishop Aymond put out an appeal last Sunday at Mass asking that we “take action against the latest HHS (Health & Human Services) mandate” that would require (effective Aug. 2012) all private health care plans (including Christian churches, hospitals, homes, etc.) to offer and pay for coverage for sterilization procedures, abortifacients, and contraception.  His letter was circulated through every parish in our province.

Our Catholic Bishops believe that these practices violate the First Amendment.  Our newly-appointed Cardinal-designate Dolan said: “To force Americans to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable. . . It is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom.”

All you need to do is go to: www.usccb.org/conscience then click on the words:
"CLICK HERE to write to Congress now !!”

The email states:  “Please co-sponsor the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179). This measure ensures that the rights of conscience of all participants in our nation's health care system will be respected.”  NOTE:  The boxes marked "opening" and "closing" on that email screen can be used if you want to personalize your message to Congresspersons.  They are optional; the message will still get there.  When you enter your name and address, it will automatically go to your reps and congressmen when you hit “send.”

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 12, 2012

Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,

do everything for the glory of God.

— 1 Corinthians 10:31

JESUS’ WAY

Today’s readings present a contrast between "Jesus’ way" and the "old way." An example of the old way is the law given to Moses and Aaron about leprosy: the leper was unclean and cast out of the community. Jesus’ way is the opposite: the leper is reached out to, touched, and finally cured.

Nor ought we think of the "old way" as restricted to the days of Moses and Aaron, or even to the "old" testament. The difference between the old way and Jesus’ way arises in own lives. We still choose, every day, to live in our old way or in Jesus’ way.

Jesus dared to touch a leper, disregarding the old way. The leper then was changed forever. He felt a calling. He couldn’t keep himself from proclaiming that he had been touched by Jesus (even though Jesus told him not to!). Once Jesus touches us, we are called to proclaim his way.

Our Church Pictorial Directories are here!

If you took a picture earlier this year for our Photo Directory, you may pick up your copy now.

The Directories are available for St. John’s parishioners in the

Parish Office and for Our Lady in Assumption Hall following Masses.

If you did not take a photo this year, a limited supply of directories are available for $10.00 each.

In two weeks’ time, the Lenten fast will begin, and the Gloria, "Glory to God in the Highest" at the beginning of Sunday Mass, will be silenced. It is an heirloom from a treasury of hymns spun from the songs of praise on the lips of Mary, Elizabeth, and Zachary. We move in the prayer from the song of the angels at the first Christmas, to the praise of God, and to a final plea to Christ to continue and complete his work in us.

For nearly 1500 years, the singing of the Gloria has been a sign of the festive quality of a particular Mass. These last few Sundays of winter Ordinary Time allow us a chance to savor the hymn and give ourselves over to the chorus. How is the song of praise arising from your pew? If you claim the song as yours, its absence from Lent will be more striking, and its return at Easter will cheer your heart.

The Parish Office will be closed Monday, December 26th

and Monday, January 16th.

Catholic Life Television Prayer Intentions

Prayer is such an important part of our lives; the more we pray the more we begin to see the hand of God in our lives. As a faith community, it is important to remember others in our prayers. Catholic Life Television is now offering the opportunity to join together by airing Prayer Intention Segments during their daily broadcasts. Prayer request will remain on the list for one month so that together we can pray for the needs of all. The first Prayer Intention Segment will premier on February 27th on Cox Cable Channel 15. To add a name please call 242-0218.

Not Married in the Church Because of a Former Marriage?

Annulments are not punishment; they do not affect children; they do not assign blame to one party or another. Much to the contrary, annulments simply determine if a prior bond was not sacramentally called by God to be an everlasting covenant. The process is much easier than you may think, is not expensive and ultimately serves to purge all the old baggage that may be holding you back from being in full Communion with the Church. Come by the parish office to begin the process!

On your journey in life, listen to the Father, Son and Spirit, for guidance toward a life of fulfillment and happiness.

Then, if you think God is calling you to a vocation, please contact

Fr. Matt Lorrain at 336-8778.

Marriage Annulment

If you have remarried and are not able to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, you are missing out on one of the fundamental gifts of Jesus Christ when He started our Church. If you have been thinking about applying for an annulment so that you can get your marriage blessed and return to full Communion with Our Lord, please visit our website at www.sjb-ola.org, pick up a brochure entitled "Marriage Annulment-Diocesan Tribunal of Baton Rouge" in the office, or call Ric at the parish office.

St. Bernardine

Most of the saints suffer great personal opposition, even persecution. Bernardine, by contrast, seems more like a human dynamo who simply took on the needs of the world.

He was the greatest preacher of his time, journeying across Italy, calming strife-torn cities, attacking the paganism he found rampant, attracting crowds of 30,000, following St. Francis’s admonition to preach about "vice and virtue, punishment and glory."

Compared with St. Paul by the pope, Bernardine had a keen intuition of the needs of the time, along with solid holiness and boundless energy and joy. He accomplished all this despite having a very weak and hoarse voice, miraculously improved later because of his devotion to Mary. www.americancatholic.org

Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady appeared 18 times at Lourdes, in the Pyrenees mountains in southern France, in 1858, to Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen year old peasant girl. A spring appeared there which feeds the baths at the shrine today. Many miraculous healings are reported from bathing in the waters. The fact that there is no spread of infection, even though no sanitary precautions are taken when people with all sorts of diseases take baths there, is a marvel in itself. Many miracles take place when the Blessed Sacrament passes in procession during the great pilgrimages. In passing, we notice that this fact testifies to the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist there, a Presence which only the Catholic Church has, and only the Catholic Church teaches. There is a medical bureau there, to which any qualified M. D. can come to check alleged cures. Early in this century, Dr. Alexis Carrel came to scoff, but was converted instead. The Church's demands for checking and proof of alleged miracles are so stringent that in the more than a century since 1858 only a few more than 60 miracles have been approved. Madame Bire in 1908 came there, blind because her optic nerve was withered; she regained her sight when the Blessed Sacrament passed. But when the Doctors inspected her eyes, they found she was able to see even though the nerve was still withered--arranged, doubtless, to keep anyone from saying it was a case of suggestion. The nerve did recover within a few weeks.

"Paved with Souls" by Father M. Jeffery Bayhi

(Reflections on and from the Missionaries of Charity and the streets of Calcutta)

Continuing the story. . .

(Copies available in office)

A big part of the morning was spent in bathing the patients at Khaligat. There was a group bathing, another undressing, some in the shower where the hose was rigged, and some were washing the discarded clothes taken from the patients. These clothes were given to still another group who dried them and returned them to the beds for the patients. It was a strange feeling to carry grown men sixty or seventy years old, one in each arm, across the room and place them on their cots. It was also totally frustrating in that there was very little you could say to them in words. They didn’t speak English and, of course, we knew no Begali. We did, however, eventually get everyone bathed, cleaned and settled on their cots.
